Alan Fletcher aka The Carpet Professor

Alan Fletcher 2021I started my carpet career in 1976 at the age 18 as an apprentice with a reputable flooring company in Milwaukie Oregon.

The owner, David, was a master craftsman and he took the time to teach me the tricks of the trade. David was passionate about his craft and was still installing flooring in his 80’s. He always had a smile on his face.

In 1998, I decided to become proactive as a consumer advocate. I wanted to help homeowners avoid common carpet buying scams and rip-offs and learn how to select new carpet wisely.

I retired from the carpet business in 2006 after 30 years and no longer sell or install carpet or flooring products.

Today, I still enjoy helping homeowners learn how to choose new carpet wisely, avoid common carpet scams and costly carpet buying pitfalls.

Back in the early 1990’s, I worked as an installer for a number of carpet retailers. I was shocked to encounter so many dishonest and unscrupulous Carpet salespeople and retail store owners.

I witnessed many store owners and salespeople blatantly lie, cheat and deceive their customers. They didn’t seem to care if the customer selected the right grade of carpet, they just wanted to write up the sale, collect the money and move on to their next victim.

As a contracted carpet installer, I would pick up the carpet and pad at the store first thing in the morning.  Then head over to the job site to do the install.

Many homeowners I encountered were totally unaware that the grade of carpet they selected was unable to meet their needs and goals.

The salesperson never asked the homeowners how much foot traffic they had, they just asked how much money they had to spend on the project.

So when I would arrive to install their new carpet, some homeowners would ask me what I thought about their carpet choice. It was obvious to me that they had made a very poor choice.

They were expecting 10 or 15 years of use, when in fact the carpet they selected was going to mat down and look bad within 2 or 3 years.

Homeowners deserve to get a fair and square deal

As a contractor working for a carpet retailer, I was unable to tell homeowners that they had made a bad choice, that the dealer had failed to help them choose a suitable carpet. That really bothered me and made me angry too.

So in 1998, I knew I had to do something to help make a difference. I wanted to help homeowners learn how to choose new carpet wisely, learn how to save the most money and learn how to avoid getting ripped off by unscrupulous carpet retailers!

So next I built a website called AbcCarpets.com to have a larger platform to reach more and more consumers. That was 21 years ago and it’s still in operation.

In 2002, I wrote a 128-page book for landlords and property managers who just might want to know how to save a ton of money on new Carpet and flooring replacements and repairs. It was titled “Landlord Floors” and was well received among landlords and real estate professionals nationwide.
