The BEST and WORST Places to Buy New Carpet?

The BEST and WORST Places to Buy New Carpet? You need to buy from an honest and reputable carpet dealer!

With over 30-years of hands-on experience in the Carpet business, I’ve learned that some Carpet Retailers are more reputable than others, and some carpet sellers should be avoided at all costs! See which carpet stores I recommend and where you can get your absolute best deal on new carpet and flooring near you.

Here’s How I Rate Carpet Retailers On a Scale of One to Five…

#8 Nationally Advertised or BIG-BOX Carpet Retailers

1.5 Stars out of 5

These corporately-owned businesses blanket the airwaves with constant and repetitive TV commercials, radio ads, billboards and bus stops! They have locations all over the country. They offer unbelievable deals on new carpet and flooring, including low-cost or free carpet installation.

I don’t recommend buying carpet from Home improvement warehouses like Lowe’s and Home Depot because they only sell the materials to you. They make arrangements with various independent contractors to handle the in-home measuring and installation. They take their profit right off the top and never have to worry about dealing with any problems or complaints you may have after the sale.

“Should you have a carpet defect or installation issue, they may just tell you to contact the carpet manufacturer directly or call the installation company to seek a remedy.”

From my experience, if you have a carpet problem or an installation complaint, it can be difficult if not impossible to find anyone to accept responsibility. Learn more: Should I Buy Carpet from Lowe’s, Home Depot, Empire Today or Costco?

#7 Local Carpet Warehouse or Carpet Outlet Stores

2.5 Stars out of 5

Local Carpet Retailer

Many local carpet stores have rolls of carpet in-stock and ready for immediate installation.

If you want to do-it-all-yourself and save a lot of money… create a detailed diagram of your home with all the room measurements and bring your truck, some rope and maybe a tarp if it is raining! These local dealers offer low prices and have dozens of rolls of carpet “in-stock”. They cater mostly to homeowners on a tight budget, landlords and property managers and D.I.Y. homeowners. They have plenty of inexpensive, lower-quality, defective or second-grade materials. Have them roll out the carpet before you agree to buy it to make sure there are no obvious defects. Check their guarantee carefully and get everything in writing before you sign on the dotted line. Once you buy it, you own it. no refunds.

The main problem when buying carpet from this type of retailer, is that they rarely have the same type, style or color of carpet available. That means if you need to buy more of the exact same carpet you bought today, it may not be available for you to buy tomorrow. Once a roll of carpet is sold, the same type, style and dye lot (color) may be gone forever. No two rolls of carpet are exactly the same. There will be differences in color or style that may be quite obvious once it is installed.

These dealers may offer in-house installation or they might just hand you a list of local installers for you to call and hire on your own. If you have to arrange for your own installation you must negotiate with the installer and pay them directly. In the end, if you pay just $8.99 per yard for the carpet, don’t expect it to last for 10 years. Even though you may get a great deal on discounted carpets, always remember that there was some reason why it was not able to be sold as first-quality goods. See which carpet stores I recommend near you

#6 Buying Carpet from a Carpet Layer

2.5 stars out of 5

Leftover Carpet remnantss

Most carpet installers have piles of leftover carpet in their garage.

Some carpet layers have longstanding relationships with local carpet dealers, or may have a way to order new carpet and padding at near wholesale prices from local suppliers. Carpet layers often end up with sizable leftovers from bigger carpet jobs because carpet so many salespeople over-measure their jobs.

When there is a lot of carpet leftover the installer may take it home and try to sell it on Craigslist or in your local newspaper. If you find an installer who has some leftover carpet or other flooring materials available at a very low price, you need to understand that they have a limited supply of those materials and have no way of getting any more of the exact same color or style. There is no manufacturer’s warranty on these materials whatsoever and no recourse if you end up unhappy with the performance.

Still, you can find some real bargains this way. As with any contractor you hire to do work on your property, I suggest you check references, verify their contractors license and business liability insurance to make sure they are all current and up-to-date. This might be an inexpensive way to go if you are just doing one or two rooms or if you need to replace carpet or flooring for a rental property.

#5 Franchised Carpet Resellers

2.5 Stars out of 5

These carpet dealers are often locally-owned but are hooked up with a national carpet distributor or co-op to increase their buying power and decrease their shipping costs. They usually use private labels to prevent you from comparison shopping at other carpet local stores. It is often much more difficult to get carpet specifications from these resellers, and it makes it much more difficult to comparison shop their products. Even so, you can still negotiate a fair deal if you know what you are doing and don’t rely on their salespeople to make choices for you.

Many co-ops do not provide installation so you may have to locate a good installation crew and pay them separately. You will have to work a bit harder to schedule and orchestrate everything, and may end up paying a little more buying from a franchised flooring dealer. but they usually have a list of local installers for you to call and they do offer a wide range of quality carpet and flooring products. Which carpet stores do you recommend near me?

#4  800-Carpet Wholesalers

2.5 Stars out of 5

These are carpet and flooring peddlers who will send you small carpet samples through the mail. They want you to buy their carpet virtually “sight unseen” (other than a small swatch) There are no refunds on discounted carpets so you really have to be fully aware of all the fine print. You can save money if you buy from a reputable carpet wholesaler as long as you know exactly what you are buying and fully understand how the entire carpet buying process works and what is expected of you, especially regarding the delivery of the carpet and what you are required to do if you need to return a roll of carpet.

Some 1-800 carpet outlets stores are reputable and some are not. The burden of being knowledgeable about your purchase falls solely upon you. Can I really buy new carpet at wholesale prices?

#3 Online Flooring Retailers

3 stars out of 5

Need Hardwoods, Ceramic Tile, Luxury Tile or Laminate Flooring? These online companies move a lot of product and can be a smart way to go if you are careful and do your homework. The biggest problem I hear about is the poor quality of the materials they offer. For example: If you buy hardwood flooring that is considered “Seconds” (cabin-grade?) it can be very difficult to install and the amount of warped, unusable or damaged product you receive can be significant and have as much as 25% waste or more.

Buying first-quality hardwoods is much more costly but the outcome is much better than if you buy a “cabin grade” product. It’s hard to know how much material to order when you have no Idea about the amount of unusable product they will be sending you. It can be a real nightmare when you have to re-order more materials because you did not have enough to finish the job due to the amount of unforeseen waste.

You can save money buying from an online flooring wholesaler as long as you know exactly what quality or grade of carpet you are buying and know in advance exactly how the entire buying process works from start to finish. Even so, you are taking your chances because you must trust what the salesperson tell you, of fails to tell you. Shipping costs can be high too and if you are not happy with the product you order you may have to pay dearly to ship it back and also pay a hefty re-stocking fee.

Some online flooring retailers are reputable and some are not, and knowing who to trust is the hard part. Even if you succeed in buying a good quality flooring at a discount, you still have to arrange for your own installation or install it yourself if you are so inclined. I highly suggest you read all their fine print and ask to see their return policy and restocking fees.

#2 Shop-at-Home Carpet Retailers

4.5 Stars out of 5

SHOP AT HOME FOR CARPET

It’s great to be able to shop-at-home for new carpet. It’s fun, easy and it saves time too.

Many people love the convenience of not having to travel from store to store in search of the perfect type, color and style of carpet or flooring and prefer having samples brought to their home. It makes matching colors easier in your own home under the optimum lighting scenario.

Many locally-owned carpet dealers are now offering shop-at-home services and this can a smart way to go for those who don’t want to drive all around town and deal with conflicting and confusing salespeople.

There are a few nationally advertised shop-at-home flooring dealers that I do not recommend, like Empire Today, because they tend to push carpets made of polyester, have unreasonably high prices and use independent high-pressure salespeople. However, I believe that “in-home carpet shopping” is a wonderful service, especially  for folks who have a hard time getting around.

There are many reputable shop-at-home carpet stores that offer quality products, have knowledgeable salespeople and reasonable prices. The shop-at-home for carpet concept is getting bigger and bigger!

Currently, I have many reputable shop-at-home carpet dealers listed in my Preferred Carpet Dealer Directory that I am happy to recommend, including The Carpet Guys who serve the metro Detroit Michigan area.

#1 Locally-Owned “Family Run” Carpet Stores

5 stars – My Favorite!

With a few remnants stood up along the back wall, some in-stock rolls of carpet on display, a neat and tidy showroom and a good selection of brand name carpet samples to choose from. These long-standing neighborhood carpet and flooring retailers buy first-quality goods directly from the carpet manufacturer, provide excellent customer service, have fair & square pricing, have knowledgeable and helpful staff and provide qualified installers. Should you ever have a problem or complaint they will do whatever it takes to ensure you are completely satisfied with your purchase.

Yes you can buy new carpet at wholesale prices. The trick is knowing how to do it without making costly mistakes. Can I Buy Carpet Wholesale?

There are plenty of good honest and reputable carpet wholesalers, but just as many not-so-good carpet wholesalers too. But even if you buy from an honest and reputable wholesaler, you still need to know how to do it right or you won’t get the deal you hoped for.

Carpet wholesalers are not in the business to educate you, and they won’t tell you everything you need to know. They are in the business to sell carpet, and they sell thousands of rolls of carpet every month. These carpet resellers really do move tons of product daily and they are too busy to hold your hand every step of the way.

If you are not well informed, and know the ins and outs, you stand to lose thousands. Especially if you do not make wise and informed carpet choices.

Please be aware of the following:

  1. Know how to choose the right carpet for your needs, goals, lifestyle and budget.
  2. Be able to determine the level of Carpet Foot Traffic in your home. Low, medium, moderate or heavy?
  3. Know exactly what type, grade and style of carpet you are buying, (including quality, full specifications, durability, warranty, fiber brand, fiber type, stain resistance, etc)
  4. Know the complete, exact and full terms of the purchase contract, including return policies, shipping costs, your responsibilities and warranty provisions.
  5. Avoid verbal promises. Every little detail must be written into the contract.
  6. Know your consumer rights, restrictions and responsibilities.
  7. Understand how the wholesale carpet business operates.
  8. Understand their carpet delivery and return policies. Shipping, Restocking fees and any added (or hidden) charges.
  9. Understanding the carpet installation process, the cost and independent contracting process.
  10. What you must do to prepare in advance, should you ever have a warranty claim. (if there is any warranty coverage at all)

The key to saving is to be well-informed.

Let me explain the potential benefits and common pitfalls that you might encounter when you buying carpet online from a Dalton Georgia Carpet outlet store. You have a lot to gain, and you have a lot to lose. Product knowledge is power and I can help you be a winner.

Buying Carpet Wholesale

Ever see those annoying pop-ups, banner and display ads that are shouting “Buy Carpet Wholesale!” these type of ads are very common on carpet websites these days.

“Is it really true that you can buy new carpet at wholesale prices? The answer is yes, sort of. Well, maybe. It’s quite possible, let me explain…”

The truth is, buying carpet from an Online Source can be hazardous to your pocketbook if you don’t know what you are doing. On the other hand, you stand to save a ton of money if you take the time to learn how to buy carpet wholesale “wisely”. You need to understand how the carpet business works before you can make it work in your favor.

CARPET WAREHOUSE

Buying Carpet Wholesale is NOT for Everyone

You need to be able to spend a lot of time talking to salespeople, investigating and researching, comparing prices and products. Then there’s interviewing independent carpet installers and preparing your home for the final event of having your carpet installed. It truly is a major event that requires making lots of phone calls, sending and receiving emails, ordering samples and keeping track of all the details.

Buying from a carpet wholesaler can be mind-boggling and it’s too much work for some people, and I don’t want you to think it will be a quick and easy task. It takes time to work out all the small details, it could take weeks before you get the whole job done. Don’t try to get everything done too fast or you could end up unhappy with the end results.

You don’t want to miss or overlook any small but important details. You surely do not want to find out after its too late. But you do want to save a ton of money, so take your time.

What is Discounted or Second-Grade Carpet?

Giant carpet manufacturers like Mohawk and Shaw make thousands of rolls of carpet every month. They have strict manufacturing specifications they must adhere to. If they make a roll of carpet that doesn’t pass their quality control, they will sell it as “seconds” to carpet retailers and wholesale carpet resellers.

What are Carpet Seconds?

Any carpet outlet store or retail carpet dealer can purchase “second grade” rolls of carpet at a significant discount from the carpet manufacturer. These rolls of carpet all have something wrong with them. It could be a color streaking problem or the dye was off-color from the original sample. There could be missing tufts or other surface defects, or the backing could be defective.

You may never know why the manufacturer decided to sell it as second-grade goods. There could be multiple reasons why a particular roll of carpet was marked as a second-grade carpet. These rolls are deemed defective for some reason and regardless of that reason are always sold without any warranty from the manufacturer.

Discontinued Carpet Styles

Sometimes Carpet makers will discontinue a certain style or color and sell off all they have in stock to make room for a new style or color. In this case, there may not be anything physically wrong with the carpet, other than the color, but the discounted price won’t be quite as attractive as those carpets with an obvious manufacturing defect.

The carpet manufacturer will offer these second-grade rolls of carpet to any carpet outlet store or retailer for what they feel it’s worth, and trust me, they know how to place an accurate value on a roll of carpet. You can save a ton of money if you buy a carpet that has a limited defect, or is just an off color. Bear in mind, there will be limited quantities of the carpet available. Once it’s gone, it is gone forever. If you find you need more of the exact same carpet, it may not be available even if you ask for it the very next day.

Why Carpet Mills Don’t Sell To Consumers

Carpet manufacturers are very picky about who they allow to sell their products. They only want the best representation for their brand. Authorized dealers must comply with certain rules and requirements and in return the manufacturer protects their sales territory. This is one reason why consumers cannot buy carpet directly from the carpet manufacturer. It would not be fair to the authorized dealers if any person could sidestep them and buy carpet directly from the manufacturer at wholesale prices. So to be clear, consumers can only purchase first-quality, brand-name carpet (covered by a manufacturers new carpet warranty) from an authorized retail establishment.

Want to Open Your Own Retail Carpet Store?

If you want to open a carpet and flooring store and be able to buy new carpet wholesale from the mill you will have a few hoops to jump through. First, since you will be representing the mill as their authorized dealer, you will undergo a thorough background check. Then you must apply for a line of credit and open a business account with a local bank. You must have a physical brick and mortar location and be open to the general public. This includes having a business license, liability insurance and everything else required by law to do business in the city, county, state, and country in which your business is located.

Then you must install outdoor signage, have enough room for customer parking and be approved by the local Fire Marshal before you can open your doors for business. Oh, and let’s not forget about the hundreds of carpet samples and display racks you must order, pay for and set up. Setting up the office, getting phones, faxes and internet hooked up. You might need to hire office and sales staff, warehouse help, a special forklift for moving rolls of carpet, a carpet cutting machine, a large delivery truck and then there’s the cost of advertising. You still need to find and hire qualified carpet installers.

CARPET WAREHOUSE 2

Buying Carpet at a Discount?

How To Buy Carpet Wholesale? Competition in the discount carpet business is fierce.  So in order to compete for your business, wholesale carpet outlets advertise heavily in many ways. They also use the internet to attract customers from all over the world.

There are literally hundreds of carpet outlet and reseller stores in the state of Georgia, with huge billboards lined up all the way up and down the interstate highways. They have detailed websites with photos descriptions of their products, detailed installation information.

They show customer testimonials, give free price quotes and everything else you might need to know about buying carpet or other flooring products from them. These are fast-paced businesses that sell tons of discounted carpet and flooring materials every month.

Sounds good so far, right? Not so fast!

There are a few ground rules you need to be aware of before you start shopping for discounted carpet. First, I never recommend buying carpet from any online source that does not have a physical location and a good reputation. This is verifiable through the local Better Business Bureau. The Media Buzz: Who is getting all the attention? Some Dalton Georgia carpet sellers are well-known from having national media attention, but that doesn’t mean you should let your guard down.

Second, Don’t believe everything a carpet salesperson tells you. Not all salespeople are honest and not all salespeople are knowledgeable. No matter what questions you might ask, a salesperson might just tell you what you want to hear. Just because they work for a carpet retailer doesn’t automatically mean they are qualified to offer you sound advice.

“Sure, we can do that for you, no problem!” If any promises are made, no matter how small, get it in writing before you sign on the dotted line.

How To Buy Flooring Wholesale? Dalton Wholesale Factory Outlets sell flooring products other than Carpet.

This includes sheet vinyl, hardwoods, plastic laminate, ceramic tile, luxury vinyl tile (LVT), and area rugs… all at deep discounts. Many products they offer are second-quality goods, close-outs and roll ends. They also have unique specials, cabin-grade wood products, promotional goods and ceramic tile closeouts. Popular today are luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), carpet tiles, waterproof vinyl tiles, vinyl tile planks (LVP), laminate flooring and many other types of floor coverings you may want to buy, all at a significant discount.

Check and double check your choices

Regardless of what type of material you buy, you need to be absolutely sure about your choices because there are NO RETURNS on any discounted or second-grade products or special-offer goods.

However, if you order “First-Quality Goods” and are unsatisfied (for any good reason), you can return your carpet or flooring materials. That is, as long you bought the full roll (more than 30 yards) and the material has not been cut. Still, there is always a substantial re-stocking fee imposed of at least 15% and the customer is responsible for all return shipping costs.

If the product is determined to be defective, the return shipping costs may be covered by the seller or the manufacturer. Special orders may be returned with a re-stocking fee of up to 70% and the customer is responsible for all return shipping costs. This makes it almost impossible for you to come out a winner. Yikes!

Return Shipping… Could Cost You Hundreds!

The carpet you ordered is not what you expected. What can go wrong? Everything or anything! The wrong color, the wrong style, you may order a 45-ounce carpet and a 38-ounce carpet shows up. It could be an honest mistake or it could be the old bait and switch routine. If the carpet you ordered is not what you receive then you can send it back right? Not always!

When it comes to Carpet Warranties… How To Buy Carpet Wholesale? You are considered responsible until your Carpet is proven to be Defective!

Ordering carpet from an online source is tricky!

Mistakes do happen and sometimes the carpet you order has manufacturing defects that are often unforeseen. If you find that there is a problem with your carpet, then it is your responsibility to prove it, to get it inspected, and finally to get authorization to return it. Often you may have to pay a shipping company to return the carpet at your expense until the final determination of fault has been settled. If the carpet discrepancy is found to be in your favor then you may receive a refund. Who is the person responsible for making this determination?

This is where it can get tricky. Their fine print can come back to bite you in the end….. Did you read all the fine print?

Shipping a roll of carpet back to the vendor can cost you hundreds of dollars.  It can be very difficult and time consuming for you. Just because you paid $80 to have the carpet shipped to your home does not mean that it will only cost you $80 to ship it back. These carpet sellers have a special arrangement with their local shipping company, but you don’t.

It could easily cost you hundreds to ship a roll of carpet back to where it came from!

You are also responsible for getting the roll of carpet wrapped up properly and put back on the delivery truck. The trucking company does not show up with a forklift to move your roll of carpet from your garage floor into the back of their truck. The truck driver will not lift a finger to help you, as it is not his job. YOU have to do it all.

Carpet Delivery TruckWhen the shipping truck (carrier) arrives, it is your responsibility to pull the roll of carpet out of your garage (assuming that’s where it is). Then you have to lift the roll into the back of the delivery truck. This is not an easy task when most rolls of carpet weigh in at over 500 pounds or more and the rear deck of the delivery truck is over four feet high. There may be other items already in the back of the truck, and you must be able to work around that too.

This is where these carpet resellers have you over a barrel. They know that once you figure out what a huge amount of physical effort it’s going to be for you to load up the carpet into the delivery truck. They know how expensive it is to ship the carpet back and also pay their costly restocking fee. It’s most likely you will decide to forget returning it and live with your defective carpet.

Sell your unwanted roll of carpet.

Put an ad in the local thrifty nickel or on Craigslist. Maybe it will sell on Facebook Marketplace? This is a very common nightmare that so many unsuspecting consumers go through each and every day. You don’t want this to happen to you!

Buying Carpet at Wholesale Prices… Wisely!

On the other hand, if you are willing to take your time… you really can save a ton of money if you know exactly what you are doing and do your carpet homework. Let me explain how the entire carpet buying process works when you choose to buy from a Georgia carpet wholesaler.

There is one carpet wholesaler in located Dalton, Georgia that I do recommend, and that is Warehouse Carpets. They have been in business since 1977 and have a very helpful website. One thing I really appreciate about Warehouse Carpets, is that they list all their staff and how to contact them. This lets me know they really care about your complete satisfaction.

Buying New Carpet Locally?

The Safer and Easier Way to Buy New Carpet!

If you’ve ever been inside a local retail Carpet showroom no doubt you’ve seen the racks of carpet samples. Some local retailers carry rolls of carpet in-stock.

Rolls of Carpet

Local Carpet Retailer with rolls of in-stock Carpet

Read through my website to learn how to choose the right carpet and then visit one of my preferred carpet dealers. Take your time. Take a few samples home. Learn what grade of carpet is best for you and find a style and color you like.

It’s always smart to get several free estimates from local reputable carpet retailers. You will pay a little more buying locally but in the long run you will save time, trouble and avoid headaches!

What to expect when buying Carpet locally

Once you place your order with a local retailer, the carpet manufacturer will ship your carpet to the local retailer where you bought it.  It might be shipped to a local carpet receiving business. It usually takes two to four weeks for delivery.

On the day of installation, their installers will load up your new carpet and padding into their truck and bring it to your home to install it.

You need to be ready when the Carpet installers arrive.

Print out my free Before You Buy Carpet Checklist to see what you need to do before, during and after you new carpet is installed. You can usually get the whole job done in about two or three weeks from start to finish. Your local carpet retailer will take care of all the details, including arranging for installation. So you can sit back and relax until they come out to install your new carpet.

Buying Carpet locally is less stressful and less risky too.

Less worries! But you do end up paying a little more for the good service you will enjoy. When you buy from a Dalton Carpet Warehouse or wholesaler, you can save a lot of money.  It takes a lot more time planning and effort, and there is certainly a lot more risk involved. If you have the time to do a lot of research, then buying from a Dalton Georgia Carpet Reseller may be the way for you to great savings! The Best and Worst Places To Buy Carpet
