Carpet Padding Basics Explained
Select your new Carpet, then select the padding that will match the grade of carpet you have chosen and the needs and goals you have set forth.
What does that mean? You don’t want your pad to wear out faster than your carpet. There are many different types of padding available today in order to accommodate all the various carpet grades, types and styles.
There are various types of pad that you will encounter when shopping for new carpeting for your home, but first you need to know a few things about what makes one padding better than another.
Padding quality and suitability is always determined by three main factors.
1. Type of Material 2. Density / Weight 3. Thickness
The Carpet Manufacturer decides what padding is required for every carpet they make. A certain type, thickness and density of padding is specified by the carpet manufacturer.
When choosing the right carpet pad, it must be capable of properly supporting your new carpet in order to maintain the new carpet warranty. You can call the carpet manufacturer to find out what padding specifications are required for the carpet you select.
It is your sole responsibility to make sure the right carpet padding is selected. Don’t assume the carpet salesperson knows what pad is required for carpet selection and application.

Rebond Type (Residential)

For most residential plush style carpets, a 7/16″ padding thickness is most common. Berber styles require a thinner padding. Usually 1/4″ to 3/8″. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that a thicker pad is a better pad. If you chose a padding that is too thick it can cause wrinkles to develop in your new carpet more quickly. If so, then you will void your new carpet warranty.
For most homes, 7/16″ is the thickest padding you should select to keep your new carpet warranty in force. That said, 1/2″ thick padding is still a common choice and widely available from most carpet retailers. A Thicker Pad Feels Softer Underfoot
I don’t recommend installing a thicker padding unless you understand the possible consequences. Using a thicker pad will increase the chance of developing wrinkles over time and will instantly void your new carpet warranty.
Some folks choose a thicker pad for their bedrooms to make the carpet feel softer underfoot. Many choose a 9/16″, 5/8″, 3/4″ or even a 1″ thick pad.
However, thicker pad is getting harder to find these days. Instead, you can opt to have your carpet installer glue together two layers of pad to obtain the same result.
Your tackless strips may need to be doubled up to adjust for the increased height. That will add some additional labor cost.
Using a thicker padding can be an enjoyable addition to your bedroom.
While you may get away with using a thicker pad in bedrooms with very low foot traffic, using a thicker pad in other areas like stairs, hallways, living rooms and family rooms would not be a good idea.
In areas with higher foot traffic, using a thicker padding would cause your new carpet to quickly develop ripples, waves and wrinkles.

Low-Profile Padding with Higher Density Rating Increases Carpet Durability.
Looped Berber carpet styles and commercial grade carpets tend to be more prone to wrinkling and therefore require a special low-profile, high density padding. Usually a maximum of 1/4″ to 3/8″ thickness, and a density rating of 10 to 12 pounds.
If in doubt, you can always call the carpet manufacturer to get the correct padding requirements needed to keep from voiding your new carpet warranty.
How To Choose the Right Carpet Padding?
Padding Density Explained
Padding quality is also determined by its Density Rating. Some pads have a low density rating of 3 to 4 pounds and is typically used in apartments and rental properties because it is less expensive and landlords know it will need to be replaced more frequently.
Padding for residential applications usually have a density rating of 6 to 8 pounds, but 10-pound density is also available and gaining in popularity.
Some folks prefer the 6-pound density padding because it is slightly softer underfoot. However, an 8-pound padding provides better support for your carpet.
A higher density rating generally make a carpet more resistant to wear and tear and abrasion. This is especially true in high traffic areas like stairs and hallways. I recommend using 8-pound density for most residential applications.
Some padding types are rated in ounces instead of pounds.
Pads made of foam are rated in pounds. The most common foam padding density for residential homes is 6-pound density. An 8-pound pad is heavier and therefore more dense. More and more carpet makers are requiring 8-pound pads as a warranty requirement because it provides better support.
Wool, Felt, Synthetic Fiber and Rubber Pads are weighed in ounces. For example, a pad of 128-ounce weight is the equivalent of an 8-pound pad. A 192-ounce pad is equal to 12-pound density.
What Homeowners Need To Know About Choosing the Right Carpet Pad
The higher the density rating, the more costly the padding will be.
Do not rely on the carpet salesperson to choose the correct pad for you, it is your responsibility to make sure the correct type of pad is selected and installed.
If the wrong type, thickness or density is selected, your carpet may develop wrinkles over time and your new carpet warranty may be voided.
If unsure, call the carpet manufacturer to see what Padding Specifications are required for the carpet you have selected.

It’s real easy to pay too much for pad, especially if you follow bad advice from an inexperienced carpet salesperson. There are many types of padding available but choosing the right pad can be challenging. Don’t blindly agree to any padding upgrade until you have a chance to do your padding homework!
You Probably Don’t Need a Specialty Pad
Don’t be swayed by a carpet salesperson who says you need to spend more for a pad that has a moisture barrier. Chances are good that you do not need a moisture barrier pad. In fact, moisture barrier pads can help cause mold and mildew to form underneath your padding. If your basement has moisture problems, a moisture barrier pad is the wrong pad for you.
You also don’t need the pad that has baking soda infused to help eliminate pet odors. The cost is high and the benefit is low. Even the box of baking soda you have placed in the back of your refrigerator needs to be replaced once a month. How long do you think the baking soda infused inside a 1/2″ thick pad will remain effective? Not long enough to make it a worthwhile padding upgrade I bet.
What about Padding That Will Extend Your New Carpet Warranty?
Carpet makers like Shaw and Mohawk now offer a special branded padding that if you buy it, they will increase the length of your New Carpet Warranty by up to 10 years.
I think the increase in carpet warranty length is just a slick marketing ploy to get you to spend more on a padding that you can surely do without. Sure, it’s a good quality pad, but it’s way overpriced.
Seasoned Carpet professionals are painfully aware that New Carpet Warranties are not worth the paper they are written on, and the fact is, a longer warranty will rarely end up beneficial to you.
It practically takes an act of congress to substantiate a valid new carpet warranty claim and even if you do, they only cover affected areas and pro rate your replacement credit based on the age of your carpet.
Specialty pads will certainly cost you more today but from my perspective they provide little to no measurable benefits to you in the long run. Frankly, I believe they are a total waste of your hard earned money.

Carpet Installers are also referred to as Carpet Layers and in Europe they are called Carpet Fitters. No matter what you call them they earn every penny they make.
Installing carpet is a hard job and it takes a toll on the body. Most carpet installers end up with bad knees, hips and back as a result of all the physical labor involved.
After 20 years as an installer it’s most know it’s probably time to find something else to do. Many open up a carpet and flooring store.
So if you are looking to hire a qualified installer, find one with at least 10 years of experience but less than 20.
If you want to get a great deal on new carpet then buy carpet and flooring from a retired carpet installer who now owns a local carpet and flooring store near you.
A great way to find a qualified carpet installer? Word of Mouth.
The best installers are often booked up weeks in advance, making it impossible to get your carpet installed quickly. For this reason, you would be wise to start your search for a qualified carpet installer before you order new carpet.
Do you know someone who has has new carpet installed recently? Talk to your neighbors and co-workers. You might be surprised how many people have some connection with a qualified carpet or flooring installer.

Most carpet retailers provide installation as part of a package deal.
Carpet retailers who have their own carpet installation crews automatically included installation as part of the package deal.
Installation is a part of the package deal. You have no say as to who is installing your carpet or know anything about their level of experience. A reputable carpet retailer uses qualified installers.
The benefit to you is that the retailer will stand behind the installation. If you ever have a problem, they will answer your call and make sure all your concerns are addressed promptly.
Carpet Installation Warranties
Many carpet stores offer a installation warranty of more than one year. Some even offer a lifetime carpet installation warranty.
The typical carpet installation warranty provided by independent carpet installers is one year.
If you hire an independent carpet installer and have an installation problem you would have to contact the installer directly.
In most cases this is not a problem and the installer will come back and fix any concerns you may have.
If you do have a installation concern, act fast… before the installation warranty expires.

Finding and hiring a qualified carpet installer can be challenging.
The best carpet installers charge a little more and are often very busy, but is well worth the wait if you need to get top-notch installation!
Some carpet installation jobs are more difficult than others and require that you hire a well experienced installer.
For example, installing expensive carpet in a custom home requires much more expertise than does installing apartment-grade carpet in a rental unit.
Carpet Install Home Depot and Lowe’s
Both Lowe’s and Home Depot have been trying to lure-in unsuspecting homeowners for years by offering low-cost or free “basic” carpet installation.
They make up a portion of this sneaky sales gimmick by charging more for the carpet and padding and by greatly increasing the added cost for anything extra you might need to complete the job.
They add on extra fees and charges for anything and everything that is considered beyond their limited definition of a “basic” installation. Their definition seems to change from time to time.
Their so-called “free” carpet installation that lures many homeowners in, may not be totally free once their sub-contracted measuring people and carpet installers get a good look at what you really need to complete your carpeting replacement project.
It’s highly likely there will be numerous extra fees & charges tacked-on to your final bill.
Not all experience is good experience
Of course everyone wants their carpet installed correctly, and hiring a carpet installer with minimum of 5 years experience is where I would draw the line with a simple installation job.
So, if you choose a more expensive carpet or your carpet job is quite large, more difficult or tricky, then you should look for a carpet installer with more years of experience.
I personally believe that it takes at least 10 years before any carpet installer can truly begin to master their craft, and that’s only if they have the desire to become the best of the best.
Should I Hire an Untrained Carpet installer?
Carpet installers are not required to attend a formal trade school. I was mentored by several master craftsmen who took the time to teach me the tricks of the trade. It took several years of practice to master all the proper installation techniques.
Unfortunately, many carpet installers NEVER become anything more than a poor-quality installer. This is usually because they either lack training, or don’t have the ambition to become a master of their craft.
Qualified Carpet Installer Near Me?
Some installers prefer to install low-quality materials and make just enough money to get by. Many prefer to work “under the table” and may ask to be paid in cash. They may offer you a discount if you do.
These are not the type of installers you want to hire because you cannot depend on them to do a good job or show up on time. That’s why everyone refers to them as fly-by-night installers.
Bear in mind, if you pay in cash and don’t get a written receipt with their name and contractors license information, then you will have no recourse if something goes wrong.
You will not have any recourse when they leave town, disappear and cannot be contacted if and when you have an installation problem.
If you have a problem with your installation it may be hard to get them to come back to fix the problem.

What type of experience does this Carpet Installer have?
Some carpet installers charge more because they are more experienced in doing custom homes and commercial work. Others may charge less if the bulk of their experience comes from doing apartment work.
You need to determine what level of expertise your job requires and then hire an installer according to their level of expertise.
If you are just carpeting one or two rooms with an inexpensive carpet, you don’t need to hire the best and most expensive carpet installer in town.
Carpeting your whole house with expensive carpet with a challenging layout would demand hiring the absolute best carpet installer you can find.
Carpet installers with this type of experience is obtained from installing low to medium grades of carpet in unoccupied apartments or rental properties.
They have limited experience with installing carpet on stairs, and limited experience with difficult or tricky installations.
Use lower quality installation products (glues, seam tape, tack-less strips, transition metals) in order to save money.
They charge less per yard because the job is less demanding and they are able to install more yards in a day.
Apartment and property management workers charge the least amount.
Teenagers hired as a carpet layers helper often become installers, but few complete a formal apprentice program.
This is not to say that you should not hire them, but you need to be aware that many may lack the experience to perform all types of carpet installations.
New Home Construction Carpet Installer
Installers with the bulk of their trade experience from new home construction will have increased knowledge of installing different types of stairs. (carpet can be very difficult to install on some types of stairs)
They will have more experience working with various styles, types and grades of carpet as well.
Have to satisfy the builder and the new homeowners with their performance, which makes them pay closer attention to detail.
Builders usually pay less than the standard rate for this type of installer but there is usually a greater volume of work available to the installer.
Residential Remodel Carpet Installer
Remodel installers are well seasoned and are paid quite well. You can count on them to do a great job for most residential remodeling applications. Remodel installers command higher fees and are booked weeks in advance.
Punctual, own a newer vehicle and neatly dressed.
Look professional and they have good answers to all your carpet questions and concerns.
Regularly install carpet and flooring in upscale homes and condos and may even do commercial work.

If you are able to schedule them, you will receive first-class carpet installation and excellent customer service. You may have to wait several weeks before they are available to install your new carpet.

Giant carpet manufacturers like Mohawk and Shaw make thousands of rolls of carpet every month.
If they make a roll of carpet that doesn’t pass their quality control, they will sell it as “seconds” to carpet retailers and wholesale carpet resellers.
What are Carpet Seconds?
Any carpet outlet store or retail carpet dealer can purchase “second grade” rolls of carpet at a significant discount from the carpet manufacturer.
These rolls of carpet all have something wrong with them.
It could be a color streaking problem or the dye was off-color from the original sample.
There could be missing tufts or other surface defects, or the backing could be defective.
You may never know why the manufacturer sold it as second-grade goods.
There could be multiple reasons why a particular roll of carpet will be marked as a second-grade carpet. These rolls are deemed defective for some reason and sold without any warranty from the manufacturer.
Discontinued Carpet Styles
Sometimes Carpet makers will discontinue a certain style or color and sell off all they have in stock to make room for a new style or color.
In this case, there may not be anything physically wrong with the carpet, other than the color, but the discounted price won’t be quite as attractive as those carpets with an obvious manufacturing defect.
The carpet manufacturer will offer these second-grade rolls of carpet to any carpet outlet store or retailer for what they feel it’s worth, and trust me, they know how to place an accurate value on a roll of carpet.
You can save a ton of money if you buy a carpet that has a limited defect, or is just an off color.
Bear in mind, there will be limited quantities of the carpet available.
Once it’s gone, it is gone forever. If you need more of the same carpet in the future, it may not be available.
Consumers cannot buy carpet directly from the carpet manufacturer, they must buy from an authorized store, carpet dealer, local distributor, online retailer or discount reseller.
Carpet Mills Won’t Sell Directly To You
You can’t just call the carpet manufacturer and order carpet directly. You must have a retail location and apply to open a business account.

How To Buy Carpet Wholesale? Competition in the discount carpet business is fierce. So in order to compete for your business, wholesale carpet outlets advertise heavily in many ways. They also use the internet to attract customers from all over the world.
There are literally hundreds of carpet outlet and reseller stores in the state of Georgia, with huge billboards lined up all the way up and down the interstate highways.
They have detailed websites with photos descriptions of their products, detailed installation information.
They show customer testimonials, give free price quotes and everything else you might need to know about buying carpet or other flooring products from them.
These are fast-paced businesses that sell tons of discounted carpet and flooring materials every month.
Sounds good so far, right? Not so fast!
There are a few ground rules you need to be aware of before you start shopping for discounted carpet.
First, I never recommend buying carpet from any online source that does not have a physical location and a good reputation. This is verifiable through the local Better Business Bureau.
The Media Buzz: Who is getting all the attention?
Some Dalton Georgia carpet sellers are well-known from having national media attention, but that doesn’t mean you should let your guard down.
Second, Don’t believe everything a carpet salesperson tells you. Not all salespeople are honest and not all salespeople are knowledgeable.
No matter what questions you might ask, a salesperson might just tell you what you want to hear.
Just because they work for a carpet retailer doesn’t automatically mean they are qualified to offer you sound advice.
“Sure, we can do that for you, no problem!”
If promises are made, no matter how insignificant, get it in writing before you sign on the dotted line.
Carpet Wholesalers Have Limitations:
How To Buy Carpet Wholesale? Dalton Carpet Retail Outlet Stores sell products other than Carpet.
This including sheet vinyl, hardwoods, plastic laminate, ceramic tile, luxury vinyl tile (LVT), and area rugs… all at deep discounts.
Many products they offer are second-quality goods, close-outs and roll ends.
They also have unique specials, cabin-grade wood products, promotional goods and ceramic tile closeouts.
Popular today are luxury vinyl tiles, carpet tiles, waterproof vinyl tiles, vinyl tile planks, laminate flooring and many other types of floor coverings you may want to buy, all at a discount.
Check and double check your choices
Regardless of what type of material you buy, you need to be absolutely sure about your choices. There are usually NO RETURNS on any discounted or second grade products or special-offer goods. Period.
However, if you order “First Quality Goods” and are unsatisfied (for any good reason), you can return your carpet or flooring materials.
That is, as long you bought the full roll (more than 30 yards) and the material has been uncut.
Still, there is a substantial re-stocking fee imposed of at least 15% and the customer is usually responsible for all return shipping costs.
If the product is defective, the return shipping costs may be covered by the seller or the manufacturer.
Special orders may be returned with a re-stocking fee of up to 70% and the customer is responsible for all return shipping costs.
This makes it almost impossible for you to win. Yikes!
Return Shipping… Could Cost You Hundreds!
The carpet you ordered is not what you expected. What can go wrong? Everything or anything!
The wrong color, the wrong style, you may order a 45-ounce carpet and a 38-ounce carpet shows up.
It could be an honest mistake or it could be the old bait and switch routine.
If the carpet you ordered is not what you receive then you can send it back right? Not always!
When it comes to Carpet Warranties…
How To Buy Carpet Wholesale? You are considered responsible until your Carpet is proven to be Defective!
Ordering carpet from an online source is tricky!
Mistakes do happen and sometimes the carpet you order has manufacturing defects that are often unforeseen.
If you find that there is a problem with your carpet, then it is your responsibility to prove it, to get it inspected, and finally to get authorization to return it.
Often you may have to pay a shipping company to return the carpet at your expense until the final determination of fault has been settled.
If the carpet discrepancy is found to be in your favor then you may receive a refund.
Who is the person responsible for making this determination? This is where it can get sticky.
This is where their fine print can come back to bite you in the….. Did you read the fine print?
Shipping a roll of carpet back to the vendor can cost you hundreds of dollars. It can be very difficult and time consuming for you.
Just because you paid $80 to have the carpet shipped to your home does not mean that it will only cost you $80 to ship it back.
These carpet sellers have a special arrangement with their local shipping company, but you don’t.
It could easily cost you hundreds to ship a roll of carpet back to where it came from!
You are also responsible for getting the roll of carpet wrapped up properly and put back on the delivery truck.
The trucking company does not show up with a forklift to move your roll of carpet from your garage floor into the back of their truck.
The truck driver will not lift a finger to help you, as it is not his job. YOU have to do it all.
When the shipping truck (carrier) arrives, it is your responsibility to pull the roll of carpet out of your garage (assuming that’s where it is).
Then you have to lift the roll into the back of the delivery truck.
This is not an easy task when most rolls of carpet weigh in at over 500 pounds or more and the rear deck of the delivery truck is over four feet high.
There may be other items already in the back of the truck, and you must be able to work around that too.
Essentially, if you buy it… then you own it.
This is where these carpet resellers have you over a barrel.
They know that once you figure out what a huge amount of physical effort it’s going to be for you to load up the carpet into the delivery truck.
They know how expensive it is to ship the carpet back and also pay their costly restocking fee.
It’s most likely you will decide to forget returning it and live with your defective carpet.
Sell your unwanted roll of carpet.
Put an ad in the local thrifty nickel or on Craigslist. Maybe it will sell on Facebook Marketplace?
This is a very common nightmare that so many unsuspecting consumers go through each and every day. You don’t want this to happen to you!

What to expect when buying locally
Once you place your order with a local retailer, the carpet manufacturer will ship your carpet to the local retailer where you bought it. It might be shipped to a local carpet receiving business. It usually takes two to four weeks for delivery.
On the day of installation, their installers will load up your new carpet and padding into their truck and bring it to your home to install it.
You need to be ready when the installers arrive.

Your local carpet retailer will take care of all the details, including arranging for installation. So you can sit back and relax until they come out to install your new carpet.

If you can… Keep the original carpet sample you selected and ordered from, until after your new carpet has been installed, use for comparison purposes to make sure you get the carpet you ordered.
Many homeowners often forget exactly which carpet style and color they ordered, especially when it takes several weeks for the carpet to be delivered and scheduled to be installed. Having the sample. or a picture of the sample can help avoid any confusion.
This is not always possible when dealing with smaller carpet retailers. They may not be able to leave the carpet sample with you for an extended period of time. Especially if it is a popular carpet style.
If you are unable to retain the carpet sample, then make sure you write down the brand, style number and color number for future reference.
Take a photo of the front and back of the carpet sample showing all the manufacturing details.
Ask These Key Carpet Buying Questions… Before you sign off for new carpet!
You always have the right to know the name of everyone who is working in your home.
Write down the full name and phone number of the installer.
Ask for his State Issued Contractor’s License Number (if required in your State)
Ask them to provide a Surety Bond and proof of Business Liability Insurance rider.
If your Carpet Dealer is providing carpet installation services for you, as part of a package deal, then the Carpet dealer is responsible to make sure the installer they provide is qualified and has all his legal and licensing affairs in order.
Before the installers arrive
Have furniture, wall pictures and knick-knacks removed from rooms to be carpeted.
Make sure all valuables are put away safe and secure.
When the installers arrive at your home
Check the carpet brand, color and style to make sure it is exactly what you ordered.
Cold carpet is more difficult to install. Have all rooms to be carpeted pre-heated to 70 degrees, 3 hours before and all during the installation process. This helps make sure the carpet can be stretched properly.
Carpet installation tools are razor sharp. Make sure kids and pets are safely out of the way in all areas to be carpeted. Never allow children or pets to roam free during installation.
What to do “After The Carpet Is installed”
Do a walk-around with the installer and inspect the carpet thoroughly. Make sure to inspect all the carpet seams. If any seams look ugly today, they won’t look any better tomorrow or next month. No seam is invisible, but they should not be obvious. Seams will not look better over time, no matter what they may tell you.
Ask the installer to fix any ugly seams right now, not later, unless they need to order more carpet to be able to fix it. Withhold final payment until you are satisfied.
Make sure all your carpet questions and concerns are addressed before the installer leaves your home.
Read Your New Carpet Warranty
Obtain a copy of the New Carpet Warranty and Read it. Most warranties are available online to read or print.
Do not make the final payment until you are completely satisfied with the completed job.
New Carpet Care and Maintenance
Read the manufacturer’s Carpet Stain Warranty and follow all cleaning suggestions and requirements.
Vacuum your carpet regularly with a good quality, well maintained machine. Spot clean as necessary.
Never use bleach on your carpet unless it is recommended in your new carpet warranty.
Consider Buying a New Carpet Vacuum
